FAIRFIELD -- The Solano County Board of supervisors - with a majority of women members - this week recognized National Women's Equality Day.
The day marks the adoption of the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote. Congress passed the amendment on June 4, 1919, and it was ratified on Aug. 18, 1920.
"Women of the United States have been treated as second-class citizens and have not been entitled the full rights and privileges, public or private, legal or institutional, which are available to male citizens of the United States," the resolution adopted by the board states.
The resolution speaks to the importance of the 19th Amendment to secure more of that equality.
Supervisor Wanda Williams presented the resolution, as well as a proclamation from her district office, to the Solano Valley Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.
"We are deeply grateful for this recognition of our service and commitment to women and families, both here and abroad," Lana Rasberry, the Social Action chair of the sorority, said on Tuesday.
"Our work is grounded in meeting real need with compassion and action," she added.
