Man dies after car was struck by train on the east side

Thursday's officer-involved shooting on South Warman Avenue marks the 16th of the year. There were 18 shootings involving Indianapolis police in 2023.

A man died Saturday night after his car was hit by a train on the east side, police said.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department police responded to a report of a fatal crash in the 5700 block of E. 34th St. near Arlington Avenue around 8:25 p.m. Saturday and found a white Audi that had been struck by a train, according to a WTHR report. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers at the scene said the man drove around the crossing guards to try to beat the oncoming train.

"Those crossing guards are there for a reason. We've got to stay on the right side of them," Capt. John Arvin told WTHR at the scene. "We can't really tell how fast a train is going when you're just looking down the tracks a little bit, but those trains are moving a little bit quicker than people think, and it's not worth your life to beat a train by three minutes."
