Report Card grades for the Vikings following their win over the Bears in Week 1

Report Card grades for the Vikings following their win over the Bears in Week 1

Well, that was a rollercoaster and a half, wasn't it, Vikings fans?

The first three quarters were about as rough a start to the game as the team could have imagined, and yet, they never gave up, and it led them to the fourth quarter. In that moment, they let J.J. McCarthy loose, Brian Flores brought the hounds of justice, and the Bears started to crumble. The end result was three straight touchdown drives that had their moment broken with a Bears one late, but it wasn't enough.

Nothing was stopping the Vikings with how they were playing late in this game and it showed.

Grade: B

J.J. McCarthy had about as rough a three-quarter start to a career as one could've imagined. He threw a pick-six, could not get the offense moving, and the entire unit seemed doomed. However, he came alive, and it seemed the training wheels got taken off in the fourth, and the team let him play with more excitement. He hit some big-time throws, nice velocity on his passes, and he made the plays and throws needed to win the game for Minnesota. This game will give him a good amount to build on as well as to adjust.

Grade: B

Aaron Jones looked rough running the ball out of the backfield. Where he really made a difference was in the pass game, where he secured the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter with a 27-yard catch. His tag team partner in the backfield, Jordan Mason, picked up the pieces on the ground, though, and ran hard. He had no easy yards, but he stepped up and kept the momentum going for the offense on with several big runs. This duo could be a good blend, but it will be interesting to see how Jones holds up all year because he looked rough at times.

Grade: B+

Justin Jefferson had a big drop that would've put the Vikings in scoring position late in the fourth quarter, but he made up all of that with a strong overall performance. They didn't have the most production because McCarthy took some time to settle in, but they were getting open all night for him and giving him every chance to make a play.

Grade: B

Josh Oliver and T.J. Hockenson were their usual, productive selves. Hockenson had some critical blocks and one big catch on a drive in which the Vikings drove it down the Bears late in the fourth. Oliver helped Justin Skule make up for his lackluster performance on McCarthy's blindside.

Grade: D

The offensive line looked atrocious. There is not much good to say outside of the unit getting their act together for the final half of the fourth quarter. Justin Skule was a liability. Christian Darrisaw should be back for Week 2 and not soon enough, but the interior was beyond disappointing. For a unit that was the focus of the revamp

Grade: A+

This unit is going to be one that carries the Vikings' defense in 2025. In 2024, they were held back from being an elite unit, but this year, they will help everyone behind them improve because of their play. Jonathan Allen and Javon Hargrave made their presence known with several pressures and two sacks from the latter.

Grade A-

Blake Cashman went down with an injury, and in his place went Eric Wilson. In his place, Wilson played out of his mind and was making plays around the field, and was even involved in blocking a punt. Andrew Van Ginkel heated up in the second half and nearly had a pattened Gink Six against Caleb Williams as well. All in all, this unit played very well, contained the Bears' run game and Caleb Williams, and they highlighted the second-half resurgence from the defense.

Grade B

The first half was rough for the secondary as they struggled to keep up with Caleb Williams, who was extending plays and drives. The Bears' wide receivers were getting open and extending their routes for Williams, and the Vikings' secondary struggled at times keeping up with it. However, in the second half, this unit stepped up and showed some promise and momentum heading into Week 2.
