Elon Musk has once again hinted that Tesla is working on something that sounds straight out of science fiction - a flying car.
Speaking on The Joe Rogan Experience, Musk revealed that Tesla is "getting close to demonstrating the prototype" of what he described as a next-generation Roadster packed with "crazy, crazy technology." He stopped short of confirming exactly how "flying" it might be, but the implication was clear enough to make both car enthusiasts and sci-fi fans sit up a little straighter.
Rogan, naturally intrigued, pressed him for details. "Will it have retractable wings?" he asked. Musk didn't take the bait, replying only that the unveiling "has a shot at being the most memorable product unveil ever." He added that the event could happen "in a couple months," but tempered expectations with his usual caveat: "We need to make sure that it works."
Musk also referenced investor and friend Peter Thiel's famous line about how "the future was supposed to have flying cars." Then, almost as if taking it as a personal challenge, he said Tesla's upcoming prototype could finally make that vision real. Whether it ends up floating a few feet off the ground or soaring higher remains to be seen.
Tesla's potential foray into flying cars comes as the company faces mixed financial results. The automaker recently reported record quarterly revenue, driven by a rush of U.S. buyers locking in electric vehicle tax credits before their expiration. Still, profit margins fell short of expectations due to tariffs, higher R&D spending, and a decline in regulatory credit income. Analysts also expect demand to slow as those government incentives disappear.
But if there's one thing Musk knows how to do, it's redirect attention. Between teasing self-driving breakthroughs, AI-powered robots, and now a possibly airborne Roadster, he's once again turned Tesla's next move into a guessing game.
As for what to expect, Musk didn't offer specs or timelines - only a promise that whatever Tesla shows next will be "unforgettable." Whether that means a car that actually flies or just hovers dramatically during its demo, Musk's track record suggests one thing for sure: the reveal will break the internet either way.
