TAIPEI (Taiwan News) -- Ocean Affairs Council Minister Kuan Bi-ling (管碧玲) announced Monday that the new edition of the National Ocean Policy White Paper will be released at the end of September.
Speaking at a symposium on marine environmental management, Kuan said the world's oceans face multiple challenges -- from plastic waste and microplastics entering the food chain to climate change driving higher sea temperatures, acidification, and sea-level rise -- as well as illegal fishing and overfishing, per CNA.
She added that emerging pollutants and deep-sea mining also pose potential risks to marine ecology.
Kuan called on China to cooperate on marine conservation near Kinmen and Matsu, stressing that marine waste knows no borders and the issue transcends political barriers.
Ocean Conservation Administration Director-General Huang Hsiao-yun (陸曉筠) said Taiwan aims to minimize risks ahead of disasters like typhoons in its marine pollution prevention work.
