Michael Palin risked safety in new travel show as he admits 'thank God I made it back' - Daily Star

Sir Michael Palin risked his safety for his new travel show. However, he hopes viewers will enjoy putting his life on the line for TV.

The 82-year-old filmed footage at Hacha Falls in Canaima National Park, Venezuela. Whilst filming, weather conditions are pretty dangerous, but despite his age, he wasn't worried.

He said: "It's not a laid path or anything. It's just a case of walking across very slippery stones and you know you're going to be wet.

"I was quite pleased with myself, because I did go in there unaided," he added. "Health and safety would have plucked me out straight away given the chance but I wanted to do it myself."

Michael is always pleased when he survives another trip for his shows. He added: "When I get back I'm usually thinking, 'Thank God I've made it back alive!'"

Sir Michael's latest revelations come after old sketches from his time on Monty Python were unearthed in notebooks held by the long-time broadcaster. Whilst donating his personal archives to the British Library, lost sketches that had never been seen before were found.

After giving the slew of documents to historians to comb over in 2017, plans for episodes that were scrapped were discovered amongst the papers. These contained various scenes that would have been included in the smash hit movie Monty Python and the Holy Grail, but were ultimately never used.

Aside from his latest TV ventures, Sir Michael is focusing on new projects just months after he made some stark comments about his own future following the death of his beloved wife. Michael's partner Helen tragically passed away in 2023, prompting the comedian to evaluate where he stood in his life.

Speaking on the Marie Curie Couch podcast, globetrotter Sir Michael admitted that he was now making plans for when his own passing comes, revealing he was now "prepared to die", with all arrangements made for the sad day. He also opened up on how much his darling wife meant to him and his life.

"Helen and I met on holiday in 1959," the star recalled, "I was about 16 at the time. It was a holiday romance that built up to a long marriage; there was always a feeling that we were a unit - I hadn't really realised until that after she'd died."

Michael Palin in Venezuela is on Tuesday (September 16) at 9pm on 5.
