Flying With a Baby? TSA's Baby Food Guidelines You Need to Know

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has issued a number of new guidelines that contain the dos and don'ts while flying in America. While we have covered most of these changes, rules, and restrictions in our previous articles, a very important question still seems to create confusion amongst people, especially for the new moms on the radar.

We get it; being a mom and flying with an infant can be a tough time filled with anxiety and potential awkwardness for first-time moms, as the idea of handling another being on an aircraft can be overwhelming. However, careful and proper planning can solve all the issues in the blink of an eye.

Out of all the common questions, like how to pack for an infant while flying or how to change diapers while flying, first-time moms are asking the TSA, Is baby food allowed? As per sources, yes! TSA allows ladies to carry breast milk and baby food items such as liquid medicines, purees, teethers, water, and juices; however, there are a few protocols to follow while carrying food items for babies.

First, make sure the quantity is more than 3.4 ounces and that it is packed properly. Second, be prepared for additional screening, and it's best to inform the TSA authorities the moment you reach the airport. As per the official website, make sure to keep the liquid food items for toddlers or infants separately in the handbag and put them out while you declare them.

It's best to carry breast milk in transparent plastic bottles rather than pouches. This step would help the TSA security inspect properly for the presence of any explosive or illegal substances (sorry, rules are rules). Strollers could also be checked via screening machines.

Screening will never involve placing anything into the liquid itself. However, TSA X-ray machines are safe for food and medication. However, suppose you wish that the formula, breast milk, toddler drinks, or baby food were not X-rayed or opened. In that case, it's always best to notify the officer.

However, the guardian present during the process must undergo additional screening, including Advanced Imaging Technology and enhanced checks of carry-on items.

Meanwhile, items such as freezer packs, gel packs, and similar cooling aids used for these liquids are also allowed in the bag. Still, if they are slushy or frozen, they shall also undergo the same screening procedures mentioned above.

All other standard screening rules, which include separating electronic devices from the carry-on bag and a pat-down procedure, apply to individuals who are 13 years and older.

Furthermore, please note that for any female who's pregnant and whose due date is within 4 weeks of your flight, you must provide a doctor's certificate stating that you've been recently examined (or had your checkups) and you're fit to fly.

In addition, families who are traveling with infants less than two years old can ask the TSA authorities to let them board early at the departure gate. Make sure your baby is well-fed and ready for the flight, and remember you are allowed to carry only one diaper in the carry-on bag per child. So, plan accordingly.

For certain airlines, like American Airlines, their website mentioned they have special rules for infants based on their age. American Airlines only allows one infant to be seated in the lap of each ticketed adult, and the infant must be included in the reservation.

However, babies under the age of 7 will need a doctor's permit that says they are fit to fly. So, make sure to check the official website of your designated airline and do what is needed.
