Eden School District voters approve one capital project, reject a second

Voters passed the first of two propositions in the Eden Central School District's "Maintenance and Modernization" capital improvement project by better than a 2-to-1 margin in a referendum Tuesday, but rejected the second one, which would have imposed a tax increase, school officials announced.

Approved 352 to 172 was a $19.3 million that will replace the roof at Eden Elementary School, update ventilation and renovate pre-kindergarten rooms at the GLP Primary School and replace the roof, parking lot and sidewalks at the middle and high school.

The second measure, which failed by a vote of 302 to 222, was a $10.7 million proposal which would have renovated classrooms and replaced sidewalks at the elementary school, upgraded the middle and high school auditorium, replaced a baseball scoreboard, renovated the main office and guidance office, and improved the ventilation systems in buildings throughout the district.

School officials said that state aid will cover 78.2% of the capital projects. Capital reserve funds will pay the local share of the first proposition, resulting in no property tax increase. The second proposition would have cost homeowners $55.96 per year on $100,000 assessed valuation for seven years, starting in 2027.
