Details behind Danny Rohl withdrawing from Rangers job application process

Details behind Danny Rohl withdrawing from Rangers job application process

However, the American businessman was clear from the beginning that the German was their top choice to replace Russell Martin.

Both parties remained in contact despite a brief halt in formal discussions.

Mr Cavenagh is now pleased to have the 36-year-old in charge for the upcoming match against SK Brann.

He told Sky Sports: "In terms of offering a job, it's not the way that it sounds where you push across a letter with a fancy type on it and a signature, where you say 'Do you want this?'

"You are constantly working on things like, moving and who the coaching staff is going to be.

"So, there's lot of details and you just pursue all of those at once."

Mr Cavenagh explained that Rohl was the only one with whom a contract was signed.

He stated that despite Rohl's initial reservations, they remained in contact and were impressed by his potential.

He said: "Danny did at some point say he would probably back out of the process.

"When that happened, we said to him 'Look, we're really impressed by you, let's stay in touch because we can see you being the head coach of Rangers at some point'."

Rangers currently find themselves eight points behind Celtic, who are in second place in the Scottish Premiership, and 13 points adrift of league leaders Hearts.

With only one league victory and two defeats in the Europa League campaign, the club has not had a successful start to the season.

However, they have a League Cup semi-final against Celtic to look forward to on November 2.

Despite the poor start, Mr Cavenagh remains optimistic: "I think everything is still to play for.

"We have dug ourselves a hole in the league, without a doubt.

"Eight behind across town, and further behind top of the table.

"We can still do everything in the league, and we can still do everything for both cups, and again, we've a little bit of a hole in Europe with two losses out of two matches, but six to go.

"Everything is still in front of us.

"We look at this not as 'What are the ambitions two or three months out'.

"We look at it more simply, and it's one of the things we like about Danny.

"'What are we doing tomorrow? What are we doing Thursday in Norway?'

"Brick by brick, we'll continue to build and win.

"That's how we'll make progress as opposed to putting targets out there."
