digiKam 8.8 has been released today for this powerful, open-source, free, and cross-platform digital photo management solution that introduces new features and improvements.

Coming almost four months after digiKam 8.7, the digiKam 8.8 release introduces a new feature that lets users import or export tag hierarchies to and from text files, support for focus point visualization for FujiFilm and Olympus/OM Systems cameras in the Preview module, and support for automatically using monitor color profiles on Wayland.

This release also introduces a new enhancement tool to the image editor to progressively blur the background of a subject in a photo, updates the G'MIC-Qt plugin to version 3.6 with expanded image processing capabilities, and improves the Progress Manager to use native desktop notifications under Linux, macOS, and Windows for seamless integration.

On top of that, digiKam 8.8 improves stability for Wayland sessions and Windows 11 background processes, improves color management and focus point extraction for supported camera models, and fixes crashes and freezes related to face recognition, DLNA server, and database operations.

It also addresses issues with tag management, including import/export and drag-and-drop operations, as well as various UI/UX issues, such as incorrect sorting, thumbnail display, and language selection. The application's internationalization has been updated as well to support a total of 61 languages.

Under the hood, digiKam 8.8 introduces support for the latest Qt 6.10 open-source application framework for improved performance and compatibility with modern OSes. Of course, numerous bugs were fixed in digiKam 8.8, so check out the release announcement page for more details.

Meanwhile, you can download digiKam 8.8 from the official website as a universal AppImage that you can run on virtually any Linux distro without installing anything on your computer. Alternatively, you can install digiKam from your distro's repositories or as a sandboxed Flatpak app from Flathub.
