Jackie Gill said: "John had Parkinson's disease, which was complicated by pneumonia.

"His son Nick and daughter-in-law Lisa have been constantly at his side, and John died peacefully in hospital this morning [Sunday, September 21]."

Born on February 24, 1946, Stapleton is known to audiences thanks to his work on programmes like Newsnight, Panorama and GMTV's News Hour.

John had one child called Nick, and was married to Lynn Faulds Wood until her sad passing in 2020.

In 2010, he joined the newly established ITV Breakfast programme Daybreak as their Special Correspondent.

In 2014, it was announced that Daybreak would come to an end after four years on the air.

It was replaced by another breakfast programme called Good Morning Britain. He remained in this role until 2015.

Discussing the news of his passing, television presenter Mark Austin said it is "incredibly sad".

Responding to the news on X, Austin wrote: "Incredibly sad.

"A good man and top presenter who could turn his hand to anything. Best wishes to his family."
