KILLINGLY, Conn. (WFSB) - Political signs in Killingly are causing controversy in town.
A number of residents are unhappy with the language and message on signs outside a home on Upper Maple Street.
The town says it is free speech, and the signs can stay.
"I mean, it's freedom of speech, but you can only go so far with it," said Jacob Gilman, Killingly.
The signs show the owner is clearly not a fan of President Trump and is not afraid to show it.
"I am all for freedom of speech, but there is a limit as to what's appropriate and what's not appropriate," said Jasmine B., Killingly Parent.
Jasmine has a ten-year-old daughter who goes to Killingly Intermediate School, just a third of a mile away from the home with the signs.
"I just think that there is a boundary between having free speech and targeting minors. That's very wrong," she said.
The town says it has gotten a number of complaints about the property but says it "complies with Killingly's non-content-based zoning regulations, including those applicable to areas near schools."
"I don't like it being that close to the school, but everyone has a freedom of speech," said Bill Whitney, New Hampshire.
Bill Whitney is working in the area. He says the town is right - the first amendment should protect this.
"If they get out of hand, then it should be taken down. But that's just - it's not hurting anybody. It's wrong, but it's not hurting anybody," said Whitney.
The town and police say they will continue to keep an eye on this situation.
