ALTADENA, Calif. (KABC) -- Two people were hospitalized after a car plunged about 1,000 feet off the Angeles Crest Highway in Altadena Sunday and an iPhone feature was what notified authorities.

The California Highway Patrol was alerted to the crash at mile marker 38 at around 6:18 p.m. thanks to the iPhone crash detection feature of one of the occupants of the car.

The feature works by using sensors to identify impacts, then automatically calls emergency services after a 30-second delay.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department, along with search and rescue personnel, responded to the scene and located the vehicle down the hillside.

Good Samaritans also helped by climbing down the hill to check on the victims.

Two people were taken to the hospital, one by helicopter and the other by ambulance. Their condition was not immediately known.

The CHP issued a Sigalert just after 7 p.m. at Barley Flats Road, shutting down all lanes of the Angeles Crest Highway.
