Gov. Livingston is the only team without a loss this season. It's been a perfect combination on both sides of the ball. The team is averaging 10.8 runs per game and is allowing just 1.5.
The shutout streak sits at 25 innings entering Monday.
It's a lineup that's close to impossible to work around with stellar talents at the top like Zach Geertsman, Dominic Labisi, Michael Novotny and Ryan Pappas. The depth is just as solid. Nine different players have at least 13 hits and RBIs this season. Despite all of that, the defense rose up in the semifinal against Elizabeth. Matty Diskin allowed four hits across 6 1/3 innings with five strikeouts and Anthony DeNora got the final two outs in the shutout. The team hasn't allowed a run in tournament play so far and has 12 shutouts this season.
Union Catholic needed plenty of offensive fireworks to win its semifinal bout with Westfield.
It didn't look promising when Westfield scored three times in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 6-3 lead. Union Catholic responded with four runs in the seventh to jump back ahead for good.
The offense is going to have to do it again against the top-ranked team in New Jersey. In two games this season against Gov. Livingston, Union Catholic has just four hits. Brayden Morrison is a budding star with a .500 average in 68 at-bats and leads the team with 28 RBIs. Chris Wilson, Gregory Vitoria and Michael Pellegrino have also had great seasons with at least 20 hits apiece and averages over .300.
