Newcastle United suffered a miserable loss on Sunday, falling to defeat against West Ham to give their new manager their first win of the season - and some fans in the Chronicle Live comments section are holding their own inquest into how the Magpies managed to throw this opportunity against relegation candidates away.
Eddie Howe's side had managed to string together three wins in the Champions League, Premier League and Carabao Cup before heading to London, and Jacob Murphy swept home the opener after four minutes, but West Ham were able to rally themselves.
Lucas Paqueta equalised for the Hammers, and Sven Botman slid home an own goal in the closing moments of the first half. Tomas Soucek added insult to injury late on to cap off a nightmare away fixture.
"I can't really defend our performance," Eddie Howe said in his post-match interview. "We let West Ham back into it with some uncharacteristic errors."
Some fans are furious at their team for throwing away what looked like an easy opportunity to keep their run going after a drab start to the Premier League season. Reader ChrisToonBarmyArmy says: "Joelinton was shocking, needs replacing ASAP. We have no time to hold onto those who are not up to scratch.
"Bruno needs to pull his finger out, yet again very poor... Howe has to accept the blame for it all going pear shaped, he put the players out, but seemed to forget where they normally play!
"Too many games this season are costing us valuable points, something needs to change, and soon, before we are too far down the table."
Commenter Terrymcdine writes: "This was the season we were going to kick on, challenge for the title even. But no, we went back to the old self-destruct Newcastle. The club knew for months Eales and Mitchell were leaving but made no attempt to replace them. The result? A shambles of a summer.
"On the pitch Bruno is a good player and gives 100%. But he is not a captain. He cannot read the game the way Trippier does and cannot change things on the pitch. Elanga is another Allan Saint-Maximin - no end product. We played one of the worst teams in the league today and we were worse than them. Hard to see where we can get an away win."
JohnHenderson says: "What an utter and total shambles - more or less the whole lot of them should have their pay stopped after that performance. Once again, look at the number of shots on target - I'm beginning to wonder if some of them actually know where the goalposts are - and even when a shot is on target it is usually straight at the goalkeeper.
"As for Pope, well what can you say - some good stops but one or two howlers as well - surely it is time to give Ramsdale a run between the sticks. We missed Trippier today, and the sooner Livramento and Hall are back the better. As for the rest, what can you say? And that was against a team second bottom in the league.
"My feeling is that Eddie is too faithful to his favourite few, he needs to become more ruthless and put the right team on the pitch because that was simply awful and embarrassing."
Jollydxb writes: "Hopefully that's the kind of performance that wakes us from our slumber, like cold water to the face after a long sleep. They all need to take a good look at themselves and take accountability. My gut feel is that they had one eye on Wednesday's match, but we certainly miss Hall and Tino/Tripps at pushing forward at full back and getting to the byelines."
Northumberlandlad says: "I have to say this is the worst I have seen us play for a while. There isn't one of them who had a half decent game. Pope should have stopped two of their goals. Maybe Ramsdale needs to be given his chance next week.
"Dan Burn was a shadow of what he has been recently, constantly leaving loads of space. Bruno and Joelinton were terrible and the rest not much better. Every match a team will have a player having poor game, but not 11 of them plus subs at the same time. Were they all frightened to get stuck in, just in case they got injured for the Champions League game?"
