Wyoming Cowboys Head Football Coach Jay Sawvel walked through Saturday night's conference-opening loss to UNLV three times during Monday's news conference.
The disastrous night in Laramie on snow-covered Jonah Field was the theme of the Q&A. There was no escape from it. On his third time through recounting the horror show, Coach Sawvel put the nightmarish events from the first game in October this way.
Sawvel admitted that the critical mistakes cost the Cowboys the game.
Wyoming will host San Jose State inside the war this Saturday. The Spartans come into Laramie with a 2-3 record overall. They're 1-0 in conference play after beating New Mexico last week 35-28. QB Walker Eget threw for 334 yards and three touchdowns in his best game of the season.
Sawvel said the Cowboys need to improve their first quarter play. Against UNLV, Wyoming recovered a turnover near the Rebels 20-yard line but then went three and out and had to settle for a field goal.
While Sawvel is looking for his quarterback and the Wyoming offense to get off to a faster start, he defended Kaden Anderson's play Saturday night. The Wyoming offense put up 356 total yards. Anderson collected 254 yards.
The weather should be better in Laramie this week. No rain or snow is in the forecast for Saturday as of now. The game time temperature should be in the low-to-middle 50s with the temperature dropping into the 40s during the game. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. inside War Memorial Stadium. The Cowboys are a slight, two-point, underdog going into the important conference matchup.
