Nick Kroll and the 'Big Mouth' Cast Get Emotional at Final Table Read (EXCLUSIVE)

'Love, Death + Robots' Vol. 4 Team on Cats, Giant Babies and MrBeast 6 days ago

"Big Mouth" may have taken its final bow on May 23, but the stars behind the beloved Emmy-winning series aren't done feeding the fans just yet.

In a special look behind the scenes, Variety has exclusively obtained the hour-long final table read for the irreverent Netflix show created by Andrew Goldberg, Nick Kroll, Mark Levin, and Jennifer Flackett.

"It was incredibly emotional to come together one last time with our cast and crew to send our cartoon kids into the future together," the four creators tell Variety. "We're so excited for everyone to see this usually private part of our creative process. Next week, we plan to release footage of the bagel bar that happened after the table read. So much lox!"

The table read for the finale, which took place on Feb. 21, 2024, at Netflix Vine Animation Studios, brought together the cast and crew for one last ride.

"It is so hard to make a season of television. But to make 10 seasons of television in the last eight years, we owe it to everyone who helped us achieve this miracle," Levin said ahead of the history-making 101st table read - the most in streaming history. "Nick, Jen, Andrew and I showed up at Netflix in 2015 to talk about 'Big Mouth.' Just to put into perspective how long ago that was, Barack Obama was still president."

Levin went on to share that Netflix only gave the team three notes over the course of 10 seasons. The first came during a song in Season 2, Episode 2, when Missy and Jessi sing a song about their bodies. "They were concerned that we were showing too much of the girls' vaginas here," Levin said, revealing they added some steam to cover their private parts a bit more.

The second note concerned Season 2, Episode 5, when Nathan Fillion and Andrew passionately kissed in a fantasy scene. "Netflix was like, ehh, a kid and grown man making out?" Instead, the characters danced the merengue.

The final note was "so graphic and so upsetting" that Levin was hesitant to show it, but eventually caved, revealing a cut scene from Season 1, Episode 7 where Rick has a "sick little dick" and Maury pulls a thermometer from his genitals. "That was a good note," Levin said with a laugh before prompting the cast to begin their read-through of Season 8, Episode 10: "The Great Unknown."

Near the end of the table read, Kroll got visibly emotional, tearing up as he delivered his final lines. "Thank you for the literal experience of a lifetime," a tearful Kroll said at the end of the reading. "As long as the internet doesn't stop existing, people will be able to watch this show for a really long time. Just feeling a lot of gratitude and love."
