Wings to move to practice facility in Dallas' undisclosed 'Project X3' in 2026

Wings to move to practice facility in Dallas' undisclosed 'Project X3' in 2026

The Dallas Wings will practice in a new facility next season at the Joey Georgusis Park, a piece of undeveloped park land in southwest Dallas, according to city filings.

The WNBA team's offices will also be based in the area that is home to a City of Dallas park project dubbed "Project X3."

The land covers 200 acres at 1200 N. Cockrell Hill Road, near Interstate 30 and Loop 12. The city doesn't consider it an official park because it hasn't been developed. But that won't be the case much longer, with the project including the Wings' practice facility and other elements, such as two to four soccer fields, to grow professional sports in Far West Oak Cliff.

City leaders positioned the Wings to play a crucial role in Dallas' efforts to revitalize downtown. But the team won't call Memorial Auditorium home until at least 2027 because delays to the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center redevelopment have pushed back the move-in date, The Dallas Morning News reported last week.

Dallas City Council will reportedly vote June 11 to adjust its contract with the Wings, which said the team would move to Memorial Auditorium in 2026 under a 15-year, $19 million use agreement that also included the construction of a practice facility adjacent to the auditorium.

Among the terms and conditions of the April 2024 agreement was an understanding that if the scope of the project changed, the city could reevaluate its commitments, and any deadline changes would require the council to act.

On Wednesday, council members debated approving a $5.5 million increase to the cost of designing and practice facility and were confused why they weren't briefed about the site beforehand.

"You're asking us to allocate dollars from the convention center construction fund, but we don't know the location, and we don't know if it's off campus from the convention center?" asked council member Cara Mendelsohn.

The city is expected to vote on approving the site on June 11.But some council members wanted to delay the vote until after they learned more about how public dollars will be spent.

City Manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert and Rosa Fleming, the convention center department's director, said the city wanted to bring designers on board to fit the team's needs and the agreement that binds the city to its duty to provide the facility on time. The City Council approved the design contract 12-3, with council members Jesse Moreno, Paul Ridley and Mendelsohn voting against it.

The Wings, who recently added No. 1 draft pick Paige Bueckers, will continue to play home games at UT-Arlington's College Park Center in 2026.
