'Star Wars' Icon Offers Candid View About Appearing in 'New Jedi Order' Movie

Mark Hamill, the performer known for his role as Luke Skywalker throughout the Star Wars franchise, has shared his opinion about possibly coming back to whatever lies ahead for the universe created by George Lucas. Although it would surely satisfy the fans of the original trilogy, Hamill has offered a disappointing update about his return. The actor says that it is time to let go, and while he's thankful for the opportunity to play such an iconic character, he says it's time to "focus on the future and all the new characters."

The last we saw of Luke was when he appeared as a Force spirit in The Rise of Skywalker after he had vanished and had become part of the Force in the divisive The Last Jedi. He appeared one last time to offer Rey some guidance, and essentially he became the new Yoda. While Hamill also made an appearance as a de-aged Luke in The Mandalorian, it seems that he may be done with the franchise as far as future appearances are concerned.

While promoting his latest film, Stephen King's The Life of Chuck, Hamill spoke to Comic Book about the possibility of wearing the Jedi robe again and wielding his iconic lightsaber in the upcoming Star Wars film, currently known as focusing on a New Jedi Order. While the movie will deal with Daisy Ridley's character likely needing help with her new position in the Star Wars universe. However, Hamill doesn't believe that Luke is the right person to assist her, and it is time for new characters to take the spotlight. He said:

"I am so grateful to George [Lucas] for letting me be a part of that back in the day, the humble days when George called Star Wars 'the most expensive low-budget movie ever made.' We never expected it to become a permanent franchise and a part of pop culture like that. But my deal is, I had my time. I'm appreciative of that, but I really think they should focus on the future and all the new characters.

"And by the way, when I disappeared in [The Last Jedi], I left my robes behind. And there's no way I'm gonna appear as a naked Force ghost."

Mark Hamill's Work Outside the 'Star Wars' Franchise Is Equally Iconic

Hamill's legacy in the Star Wars universe is unquestionable. There will only be one Luke Skywalker, and while his presence in the sequel trilogy is important in terms of the narrative, bringing him back to reprise the role would only work as fan-service. Besides, as his career proves, he's not only a great Luke Skywalker, or an impressive voice actor, having voiced legendary villains such as Skeletor and the Joker among many others, and his live-action appearances outside the Star Wars franchise are also of note.

Some stand out more than others, of course. His performance as Reverend George in John Carpenter's Village of the Damned is good but not as memorable as his role in the horror anthology Body Bags. Most recently, he was a great Arthur Pym in Mike Flanagan's The Fall of the House of Usher, a collaboration which bore fruit, as Hamill now appears in The Life of Chuck, also by Flanagan. For his upcoming role, Hamill will return to Stephen King land, and portray the Major in the soon-to-be-released dystopian horror thriller, The Long Walk.
