LETTER: Proposed cuts will harm many Utahns

LETTER: Proposed cuts will harm many Utahns

Dear Editor,

Republicans in Congress just passed the largest health care cuts in American history, including $500 billion in cuts to Medicare and $700 billion in cuts to Medicaid.

Early on the morning of Thursday, May 22, 2025, House Republicans passed President Trumps "Big, Beautiful Bill" to advance Donald Trump's legislative agenda of extending and expanding his 2017 tax cuts while cutting the social safety net and investments in clean energy.

Further, the bill would:

* The bill would reduce the income of the poorest people in America while simultaneously increasing the income of the wealthiest people in America, according to an analysis from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office;

* Food stamps would be cut by $267 billion over 10 years, amounting to an estimated 25% cut to the entire program;

* Cuts at least $193 billion in tax credits for clean energy projects, but probably more than that due to last minute changes to the bill;

* Increases taxes on nonprofits and universities;

* The national debt would increase by $3.8 billion through 2034.

The bill now goes to the U.S. Senate for their approval. Changes may occur. If you have concerns, please express them to Senators John Curtis and Mike Lee. Contact them immediately on your phone using the "5 calls" app, or email/text/call at 202-224-5444 for Lee and 202-224-5251 for Curtis.
