CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The family of the boy involved in a fight at Ardrey Kell High School is now suing. They are seeking damages for slander, assault and battery, emotional distress and more.
This all started in March, when the boy and girl got into a fight at the school. Her family held a news conference, accusing the boy of a hate crime, saying he hit her because of her religion. The FBI said it was not a hate crime.
In this new lawsuit filed by the boy's family, they say the hate crime allegations made by the girl's family were defamatory. They also say she started the fight. His family is seeking at least $100,000 in damages.
Community activist Jibril Hough is also named in the lawsuit. He tells us in a statement that the lawsuit is a "further attack on the girl and her family."
