The Cedar Rapids woman who was killed in a crash while fleeing from law enforcement, also killing the driver of another vehicle, had a history of criminal activity, including fleeing and eluding.
According to online Iowa court records, Brittany Dale Miles, 36, was arrested on June 20 and charged with a myriad of crimes including operating a motor vehicle without the owner's consent, second degree harassment, and assault with the intent to cause injury. Another charge in the case was eluding over 25 mph over limit - second or subsequent and driving while barred - habitual offender.
The court documents said that Miles had been convicted of eluding in 2018 in Buchannan County. A jury trial had been set for Feb. 24, 2025, and her pre-trial release was being revoked.
According to the records, Miles had a warrant for her arrest and, when an officer approached her, she "locked the officer out of the vehicle and started the car. The officer continued to give the defendant commands which defendant disobeyed and then took off in the vehicle at a high rate of speed. Officers pursued after the defendant in which she failed to stop. Officers had their top overhead lights and sirens activated in order to initiate the stop in which the defendant disobeyed. While the defendant was fleeing from officers, she was reaching speeds of 100 mph and 90 mph, which were more than 25 mph over the posted speed limit."
On Sept. 19, 2021, she was arrested for eluding and interference with official acts. According to Linn County documents, Miles tried to escape from a marked vehicle by going over 25 mph above the speed limit.
Many previous citations and arrests were in her name having to do with traffic issues. She has also been charged with assault and theft on several occasions.
