When will rainy weather end? Met Eireann warn of thunder and heavy showers

Whether you're at home, have plans to head out or are at Electric Picnic, the weather isn't in our favour as showers, turning thundery and heavy at times, have been forecast

Met Eireann has warned of thunder and heavy showers over the next few days.

The forecaster explained that the week will remain unsettled with spells of rain and showers, with it feeling cooler than recent days with temperatures reaching the mid to high teens.

However, there is a good deal of uncertainty in the details looking further ahead, but there is a signal for unsettled weather to continue, with further spells of rain and showers.

Met Eireann found that between Monday, 1 September to Sunday, 7 September, low pressure is set to continue dominating our weather, bringing in unsettled conditions from the Atlantic.

They said: "It will be wetter than average across the country for the time of year, with the most rainfall forecast for the southwest, west and northwest. Temperatures will be average for the time of year."

During the following week, between Monday, 8 September to Sunday, 14 September, there is a small signal for mean sea level pressure to increase.

Met.ie wrote: "Rainfall amounts are forecast to be below average for the time of year, while temperatures are forecast to be close to average or slightly above."

Weather models from WX Charts, a weather forecasting website, predicted that the heavy rain will slow down and clear, for the most part, next weekend on Saturday, 6 September.

However, current indications show that this won't last for long before more frequent rain returns to Ireland.

Here is your weather forecast for the week ahead:

Saturday, 30 August

Wet and blustery this morning with rain spreading northeastwards across the country, turning heavy or thundery in places with localised flooding possible. The rain will clear to showers and spells of sunshine through the afternoon. Highest temperatures of 16 to 21 degrees in fresh to strong and gusty southerly winds, veering southwesterly as the rain clears.

Continuing breezy tonight, with showers most persistent in the west and south of the country. The showers will turn heavy or thundery at times with the chance of localised flooding. Staying largely dry elsewhere, with clear spells developing and just isolated showers. Lowest temperatures of 10 to 13 degrees with fresh to strong and gusty southerly winds, strong along Atlantic coasts.

Sunday, 31 August

Breezy and showery tomorrow, with widespread showers turning heavy or thundery in places which may result in localised flooding. Showers will merge into longer, more persistent spells of rain through the day, particularly in the west and northwest, with limited sunny intervals developing. Highest temperatures of 14 to 18 degrees with fresh and gusty southerly winds, easing mostly moderate in the evening.

Showers continue to feed in from the west on Sunday night, merging into longer spells of rain at times in the northwest and west, turning heavy in places. Clear spells and scattered showers elsewhere. Lowest temperatures of 10 to 13 degrees with moderate to fresh west to southwest winds, strong along Atlantic coasts.

Monday, 1 September

Sunny spells and widespread showers on Monday. Showers will turn heavy and possibly thundery at times before easing in the evening and becoming mostly confined to the west. Highest temperatures of 14 to 18 degrees with moderate to fresh westerly winds, easing light to moderate through the evening.

Showers will continue to feed in from the Atlantic on Monday night but will stay mostly confined to the west and northwest. Largely dry with clear spells elsewhere, though it may become cloudier in the south towards morning with a chance of rain clipping southern coastal areas. Lowest temperatures of 9 to 12 degrees with mostly light southerly winds.

Tuesday, 2 September

Showers continuing to feed in from the west on Tuesday, though not as heavy and widespread as preceding days. Spells of sunshine too, though more persistent cloud and a longer spell of rain may continue to affect southern and southeastern coastal areas. Highest temperatures of 15 to 18 degrees with light to moderate southerly winds veering northwesterly through the day.

Wednesday, 3 September

Current indications show another unsettled day on Wednesday with further showers and the chance of a more persistent spell of rain moving across the south. Highest temperatures of 15 to 17 degrees with mostly light westerly or variable winds.
