Dangerous wild animal in Wiltshire that's 'world's most fearsome natural villain'

International wildlife charity Born Free recently revealed there are more than 2,700 dangerous wild animals being kept privately (with a licence) in the UK and Northern Ireland.

And there could be more being kept without a licence.

A Born Free survey, conducted back in 2023, revealed a total of 187 private addresses across 126 local authorities hold licences to keep dangerous wild animals such as lions, tigers, crocodiles, and venomous reptiles.

Wiltshire was among the areas in Britain where dangerous wild animals can be found.

The Born Free survey showed there are 73 dangerous wild animals living in Wiltshire, including American Plains Bison and Asian Leopard Cats.

The full list of dangerous wild animals living in Wiltshire, according to Born Free, are:

Wolves are the largest members of the dog family and are legendary for their "spine-tingling" howl, which they use to communicate.

They can grow up to 63 inches long and weigh 175 pounds, and have an average life span (in the wild) of six to eight years, according to National Geographic.

While they are more commonly found in the likes of Canada, Alaska and Asia, Wolves can be found across the UK and Europe, including in Wiltshire.

Wolves are described as "one of the animal world's most fearsome natural villains" by National Geographic.

And while they are depicted in some children's movies like Frozen and Beauty and the Beast as a danger to people, this is not the case.

Kira Cassidy, a researcher with the Yellowstone Wolf Project, explained: "My experience is they're pretty terrified of people. Or they are very wary to the point where most people won't see one."

They "almost never" attack humans, but are known to prey on domestic animals.

National Geographic added: "Adaptable gray wolves are by far the most common and were once found all over the Northern Hemisphere.

"But wolves and humans have a long adversarial history. Though they almost never attack humans, wolves are considered one of the animal world's most fearsome natural villains.

"They do attack domestic animals, and countless wolves have been shot, trapped, and poisoned because of this tendency."
