Lola Young files lawsuit against producer Carter Lang over songwriting credits

Rising British singer Lola Young is embroiled in a legal battle with US producer and songwriter Carter Lang over songwriting credits on four of her tracks, including the massive hit single "Messy."

The 24-year-old artist and Sony Music Publishing filed an intellectual property claim in London on Wednesday, with her lawyers stating they had "no choice" but to take action. The move comes as Young is recovering from a collapse on stage in New York, which led to the cancellation of all her shows "for the foreseeable future."

Young's single, "Messy," became a viral sensation late last year, spending four weeks at number one and currently standing as the second most-streamed song of 2025 so far in the UK. Lang is one of four producers credited on the track and has worked with the singer on other material.

However, the dispute centers on Lang's claims to writing credits on four songs, which Young's team "strongly refuted."

A statement released by her lawyers expressed "immense disappointment," adding, "we will not allow Lola's reputation and integrity to be called into question -- particularly so long after the sessions took place and agreements were put in place." The statement emphasized that Young has always been "authentic in her songwriting process and acknowledges songwriting contributions where appropriate."

The legal team noted that the dispute has been "ongoing for several months" and expressed confidence in the eventual outcome, stating they "look forward to the truth being established."

Carter Lang, who has not yet responded to the filing, is a highly sought-after producer, known for his work with R&B star SZA, as well as collaborations with major artists including Justin Bieber, Post Malone, and Rosé. The specific four tracks involved in the legal claim have not been confirmed by Young's representatives.
