A Kent town was considered to be "shabby" has made a huge transformation over the years and is now one of the "best" in the UK.

With its stunning coastline, vibrant community, and rich heritage, it's no wonder Folkestone was named one of the best places to live by The Sunday Times. Situated on the English Channel, the harbour town features cobbled streets, shopping delights, and an remarkable array of modern art, attracting visitors of every age.

The Sunday Times celebrated Folkestone as a "this once shabby old seaside resort" that now "feels like a younger, fresher and cheaper version of Brighton". It also claims the coveted distinction of being the finest place to live in the southeast.

The publication emphasised how Folkestone's arts-driven revival extends beyond the creative workshops, trendy boutiques, or the opportunity to enjoy drinks on the renovated Harbour Arm. It also features excellent schools, cutting-edge leisure centres, and rapid rail links to London.

Previously a stylish seaside destination throughout the 19th and mid-20th centuries, Folkestone lies on the southern fringe of the North Downs, positioned between two clifftops. For those planning a visit to this delightful coastal town, there's an abundance of activities on offer.

The lively High Street and Bouverie Place Shopping Centre are sure to keep retail enthusiasts content. TripAdvisor recommends visiting the Kent Battle of Britain Museum, Lower Leas Coastal Park, local beaches, and art galleries.

There's also a wide array of tempting restaurants and bars dotted around the town, offering a taste of everything you'd expect from a seaside location.

What's more, Folkestone's superb transport links mean you're never too far from the action - a swift 55-minute train journey will take you to King's Cross London for an effortless trip into Europe. The M20, A20 and A259 are all easily reachable from Folkestone, making travel across the country straightforward.

The town's arts scene is flourishing, with many famous artists leaving their imprint, including internationally-renowned sculptor Anthony Gormley's iconic Iron Men and Cornelia Parker's striking Bronze Mermaid. Intriguingly, the mermaid was reportedly cast from a real-life resident of Folkestone, who still lives in the town today.

With so much to offer and affordable housing prices, it's no surprise that Folkestone is being touted as the new, younger, and trendier Brighton.
