New images show progress is being made to repair a major road following a rockfall.

One lane on the A40 was blocked following the rockfall at Leys Bend, on the Herefordshire/Monmouthshire border, earlier this year.

A team of specialists have designed a complex engineering plan and, after extensive survey work, debris can now be safely removed and the hillside safeguarded to allow the road to be reopened.

Two public information events will be held this month to update road users and locals about the ongoing work and to allow them to speak to the project team.

As part of the repair effort and to improve the long-term safety of the location, a patterning of steel bolts and steel mesh will be installed across the affected stretch of slope to prevent further rockfalls.

National Highways route manager Joseph Walmsley said: "So much work has gone into planning these engineering works and ensuring the safety of both road users and our workforce.

"Safety was always the priority for us so we had to be sure we had a plan to prevent further rockfalls at this location.

"Thanks to a team of experts and extensive surveys, we have been able to stabilise the area and start work on this quite complex engineering solution.

"We are excited to share details of the work and to offer more insight into the scheme so please do come along to the information events, we are there to answer any questions you may have."

Information events are scheduled for September 12, from 11am to 7pm, at Shire Hall, Agincourt Square, NP25 3DY, and September 13, from 10am to 2pm, at Monnow Bridge, Monnow Street, NP25 5ES.

The contraflow system currently in place will continue until the completion of the work.
