Razorbacks rough up Doyle, Vols to square the series | Chattanooga Times Free Press

After losing to Tennessee on Thursday, the only way Arkansas could win this weekend's series in Fayetteville was by taking down the Volunteers on a night ace Liam Doyle started.

The Razorbacks were more than ready to tee off on that assignment.

Brent Iredale, Ryder Helfrick and Logan Maxwell each homered off Doyle as Arkansas squared the three-game series Friday evening with an 8-6 victory at Baum-Walker Stadium. The rubber match is Saturday at 3 p.m. Eastern, and it will be televised by the SEC Network.

The No. 5 Razorbacks will take a 42-12 overall record and a 19-10 Southeastern Conference mark into their regular-season finale, with the No. 14 Vols entering 41-14 and at 16-13 within the league.

Doyle threw 104 pitches and racked up 10 strikeouts, but he failed to work five full innings in his roughest outing of the season. The junior left-hander gave up a season-high eight runs and a season-high three homers in falling to 9-3 and watching his earned run average jump from 2.17 to 2.72.

Helfrick's two-run homer to left-center field in the third inning put the Razorbacks ahead to stay at 5-4.

Former McCallie School and Cleveland State standout Austin Breedlove replaced Doyle and retired five of the six batters he faced, including three by strikeout. It was easily Breedlove's best outing this season in conference play.

Tennessee had another strong night at the plate, with Andrew Fischer racking up three hits and Dean Curley, Reese Chapman and Cannon Peebles each collecting two. Peebles drove in three runs, with his single to center scoring Curley and Dalton Bargo to give the Vols their last lead at 4-3 in the third inning.

Levi Clark's two-run homer to right in the seventh pulled Tennessee within 8-6.
