'Pop the Balloon' coming to Netflix: What to know about the viral dating show

Pop-ular dating program Pop the Balloon is officially getting the Netflix treatment.

On Thursday, the streaming service announced that it will begin airing a live version of the viral online speed-dating series titled Pop the Balloon LIVE every Thursday at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT starting on Apr. 10. Hosted by Yvonne Orji (Insecure), Pop the Balloon LIVE will follow the same premise as its predecessor -- which sees participants hold red balloons that they pop if they're uninterested in a potential suitor -- but is also set to incorporate a few fresh twists, real-time eliminations, and even some celebrity appearances along the way.

"We're thrilled to see Pop the Balloon take on a new life on Netflix. From day one, we've kept love and fun at the heart of the show, and watching it evolve and soar beyond our wildest dreams has been truly exciting," Pop the Balloon creators Bolia "BM" Matundu and Arlette Amuli, who now serve as executive producers on the Netflix version, said in a press release. "As executive producers, we're proud to support this next chapter and can't wait for both new and longtime fans to experience it. Yvonne is engaging, witty and authentic -- and we are looking forward to her serving as the host for the reimagined version at Netflix!"

In addition to the contestants, a collection of celebrity guests including The Challenge's Johnny Bananas, Too Hot to Handle's Chase DeMoor, Teen Mom's Farrah Abraham, and The Ultimatum's Zaina Sesay will also be popping by to try their hand at finding love this season, too.

Pop the Balloon originally started as a YouTube series, with each episode introducing an eligible bachelor or bachelorette and a group of potential suitors. The suitors are all given a red balloon, which they can decide to either pop -- expressing their disinterest -- or hold on to in the hopes of going on a date. But watch out, because the bachelor/ette can also pop the balloons of suitors, too.

The last suitor left holding their balloon will be given the option to go off with their new match. However, if no balloons are left by the end of the round, the bachelor/ette is sent home.

A spoof of the series was also featured on recent Saturday Night Live episode, with Heidi Gardner, Chloe Fineman, Sarah Sherman, Jane Wickline, and Ashley Padilla all playing contestants who couldn't help but pop their balloons after meeting weirdly eccentric bachelors played by Kenan Thompson, Andrew Dismukes, and Dave Chappelle.

Pop the Balloon LIVE will premiere on Thursday, Apr. 10 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on Netflix.
