Blood Worm Moon coming to night sky this week: When to see the total lunar eclipse

Over the next few days, many Americans will be seeing red.

This is due to the total lunar eclipse, which will cast a "Blood Moon" into the night sky, viewable in all of the lower 48 states.

This full moon is also being called the "Worm Moon," one of the Native American names traced back to the 1930s by the Maine Farmers' Almanac.

"The more southern tribes called this the Worm Moon after the earthworm casts that appeared as the ground thawed," said NASA. "It makes sense that only the southern tribes called this the Worm Moon. When glaciers covered the northern part of North America they wiped out the native earthworms. After these glaciers melted about 12,000 years ago the more northern forests grew back without earthworms. Most of the earthworms in these areas are invasive species introduced from Europe and Asia."

Here's when you can view the Blood Moon and total lunar eclipse in the Upstate.

What is a lunar eclipse?

A lunar eclipse occurs when the sun, earth, and moon are aligned. A total lunar eclipse will then take place where the earth comes between the sun and moon, preventing direct sunlight from reaching the moon, according to Time and Date. As a result, the sun casts the earth's shadow across the moon's surface. Total lunar eclipses can only occur during a full moon and when the moon is at (or very near) a lunar node, setting the sun, moon, and earth into a straight line.

When will the total lunar eclipse appear in the sky in the Upstate?

The total lunar eclipse will begin on Thursday, March 13, at 11:57 p.m. It will be at its maximum peak on Friday, March 14, at 2:58 a.m., 1.178 magnitude. It will end on Friday, March 14, at 6 a.m. The eclipse will last for six hours and three minutes.

What will the total lunar eclipse look like?

Per Space, the total lunar eclipse will begin as the moon enters earth's penumbral shadow, creating a subtle shading effect. A dark shadow will creep across the lunar surface as the eclipse moves further into the umbra. During totality, the lunar surface will glow a reddish-orange hue, referred to as the "Blood Moon."

What will the weather be like in the Upstate during the eclipse?

Here's what the weather will be like during the days the total lunar eclipse, according to the National Weather Service at GSP:

∎ Wednesday: Sunny, with a high near 78. Calm wind becoming south 5 to 7 mph in the afternoon.

∎ Wednesday night: Mostly clear, with a low around 49. West southwest wind 5 to 8 mph.

∎ Thursday: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 74. Calm wind becoming south southwest 5 to 7 mph in the afternoon.

NASA predicts the next total lunar eclipse to be visible in the U.S. on March 3, 2026.
