Ireland Weather: Maps show worst affected areas as expert warns of 'over 100mm' of rain in expected deluge - Irish Mirror

The drenching that large parts of the country was subjected to for most of last week shows no sign of letting up ahead of what is going to be a very wet start to November.

Indeed, Alan O'Reilly of Carlow Weather has suggested that parts of Ireland will be hit with over 100mm of rain in the week ahead, which could have a significant impact in areas with already saturated land and rising river levels.

The southwest, according to weather maps posted on X by O'Reilly, will be the worst affected, with parts of Cork and Kerry threatened with over 150mm of rain before next Friday.

Both counties, as well as Galway and Mayo, were affected by weather warnings for rain earlier this week and more are likely to follow as the heavens open in the coming days.

According to the Met Éireann forecast, low pressure will dominate for the foreseeable future, bringing "unsettled conditions with rain, showers and blustery winds".

A relatively bright start on Saturday in many areas looks set to be a false dawn for what lies ahead, with showers set to come in from the west and become widespread as the day progresses. Many of those showers will be heavy and some of them will bring hail as well as rain.

Sunday will start off similarly dry and bright before turning wet and gloomy from the afternoon onwards and there will be little let up from the inclement weather until next weekend at the earliest.

Glimpses of sunshine will appear on Tuesday and Thursday either side of what is shaping up to be the wettest day of the week on Wednesday, albeit it will be quite mild, with temperatures reaching highs of 15 degrees.

Although hard to predict at this remove, Met Éireann's outlook for next weekend is not an optimistic one, suggesting the "weather will continue unsettled with spells of rain and showers spreading from the west and with blustery winds at times".

Check out Met Éireann's forecast for the week ahead below.

A bright day with sunny spells. Scattered showers in the west this morning will become more widespread through the afternoon and evening, some heavy with a chance of hail. Breezy with moderate to fresh southwesterly winds and highest temperatures of 9 to 11 degrees.

Widespread showers will continue at first tonight with a chance of hail. The showers will become more isolated overnight with long clear spells. Lowest temperatures of 2 to 6 degrees in light to moderate southwest winds.

Tomorrow will start off mainly dry with spells of sunshine and just well scattered showers. It will turn cloudier through the day with patchy rain and drizzle developing over the western half of the country in the evening. Highest afternoon temperatures of 9 to 12 degrees in moderate southwest winds.

On Sunday night, rain will affect all areas. It will be heavy at times and will become more showery in nature overnight. Mild with lowest temperatures of 12 to 14 degrees with fresh to strong southwesterly winds.

On Monday, there will be further spells of rain, heavy at times. Highest temperatures of 13 to 15 degrees with fresh to strong southwesterly winds. On Monday night, rain will continue for a time, but will mostly clear overnight with showers following from the west. Lowest temperatures of 10 to 13 degrees with fresh southwesterly winds.

Tuesday will bring sunshine and showers, which will gradually die out through the evening. Highest temperatures of 12 to 15 degrees with moderate southwest breezes. Tuesday night will start off mainly dry. However, rain will develop in the south and spread northwards overnight. Lowest temperatures of 5 to 10 degrees with light to moderate southeast winds.

Wednesday will be a wet day with spells of rain, which will continue through Wednesday night. Highest tempertures of 12 to 15 degrees with light to moderate southerly or variable breezes.

Thursday will start off with rain in most areas. The rain will clear eastwards with sunshine and showers following. More rain will spread from the west later in the day.

Through Friday and next weekend, the weather will continue unsettled with spells of rain and showers spreading from the west and with blustery winds at times.
