HUNTSVILLE -- Drew Hart allowed just one baserunner Monday to lead the Eugene Eagles to a 3-0 victory against the Westran Hornets in a Class 2 sectional contest.
Hart gave up a first-inning single before retiring the final 19 Hornets he faced to lead the Eagles (23-8) to the quarterfinals Wednesday against Scotland County (12-8) in Memphis. Game time has yet to be announced. Scotland County advanced with a 12-7 victory on the road against Silex in its sectional Monday.
Eugene, the visitor on the scoreboard in the sectional, tallied two runs in the top of the first inning.
Hart was hit by a pitch to start the inning and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Garet Wood. Sam Schulte followed with a double to left-center to score Hart with the first run of the game.
Jeffrey Schulte then hit a grounder up the middle and was safe on a high throw to first as Sam Schulte scored to make it 2-0.
Hart struck out the first two Westran batters in the bottom of the first before Connor Harvey singled to left for the Hornets' lone hit in the game. A grounder to short ended the inning.
The Eagles scored their other run in the second. With two outs, Chase Kempker walked and stole second before a pair of passed balls allowed him to score.
Hart did not allow a walk and recorded 14 strikeouts, He had multiple strikeouts in six of the seven innings, including retiring the side on strikes in the third.
Harvey took the loss, working six innings. He gave up three runs on four hits and three walks while striking out 10. Gage Adler gave up one hit in relief in the seventh for the Hornets.
Westran, which won its first district baseball title in the past nine seasons, ends at 16-8.
