MIRI (Sept 18): Societal progress should be measured not only by economic development but also by the warmth of its people and their spirit of mutual aid, said State Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts, Datuk Sebastian Ting.
He made the remarks at the Love and Care event held at the Miri Home for The Aged yesterday, where he called on the community to continue expanding love and attention to the elderly.
"Loving the elderly is about valuing our roots and respecting the wisdom that comes with experience," said Ting.
The Piasau assemblyman further highlighted that the compassion and welfare-driven spirit of Mirians is a unique attraction that enhances the city's appeal as a tourism destination.
The event, organised by the Persatuan Prihatin Masyarakat Miri (PPMM), saw participation from volunteers, including schoolchildren and their parents, who joined as 'young volunteers' to bring cheer to the residents.
Ting emphasised that the Mid-Autumn Festival symbolises unity and warmth, making it an ideal occasion to foster community solidarity and bring joy to the elderly.
"This programme is more than a celebration - it is an act of social responsibility. Through the dedication of the volunteers, we encourage everyone to take part in charitable activities to create a loving, unified community," he said.
Volunteers and PPMM members provided a variety of services for the elderly, including haircuts, manicures, aromatherapy massages, and shared a meal with the residents.
Ting noted that these simple yet heartfelt gestures are a powerful representation of unity and community strength.
