Ohio State football projected depth chart for Grambling State game in Week 2

Ohio State football projected depth chart for Grambling State game in Week 2

After an offseason of predictions, projections, opinions, and ranking lists of everything you can think of, we finally got our first live look at the Ohio State football team, and it was jubilant for Buckeye fans because OSU took care of business by downing No. 1-ranked Texas last Saturday.

It was the first game as defending College Football Playoff national champions, and Ohio State did not disappoint. There are bigger fish to fry, but so far, so good.

We've tried to figure out the starting day depth chart since the confetti stopped falling in Atlanta, and we've had to retool it several times because of transfer portal additions and development within position battles that surprised us in a lot of cases. And now that we saw some live action on the field, we are closer to knowing what that depth chart is now, more than ever.

In fact, it sure seems like most positions are locked up aside from some in-game adjustments because of injury or production, but of course, there could always be surprises when the colors of scarlet and gray run out of the tunnel against on Saturday.

Here is the projection of the Ohio State football depth chart as we get ready to see the Buckeyes take on Grambling Saturday.

Sayin didn't have a great opener against Texas, but he looked poised and in control. Had it not been for a few drops, he probably would have had a bigger day. There's a good chance his stats are much better this weekend.

Both will get carries again, but it was a bit surprising that CJ Donaldson ran into the huddle as the starter last week. We're going to stay with that, knowing that both will get almost equal opportunities.

We pretty much saw this rotation in Game 1 against the Longhorns, aside from Rodgers and Porter flipping spots between the backup spot of the slot and Y. We'll see if that continues.

The coaching staff has a lot of options here with Bennett Christian and Jelani Thurman also able to be productive and in the mix, but the top two are pretty clear. Here's to hoping Klare steps out a little more this week and continues to look more comfortable in the scarlet and gray.

There is depth here, and one of the most competitive position battles appears to be set with Phillip Daniels winning the job over transfer Ethan Onianwa. Because of that, we've slotted him at his more natural position of left tackle behind Austin Siereveld. The rest of the pecking order and rotation seem to be pretty locked in, barring injury.

There was a bit of an injury scare with Kenyatta Jackson last week, but it seems as though he's ready to go and should be his usual disruptive self at defensive tackle. The rest of the defensive line is pretty set and exactly what we thought coming out of camp. They'll all continue to rotate in and out to keep each other fresh.

This is one of the most athletic linebacking groups we've seen on the banks of the Olentangy in a long, long time. Pierce now appears to be at middle linebacker, and Pettijohn over at the Will spot. There are interchangeable parts here, though with the mostly two-linebacker look.

This looked a little different than what we thought coming out of camp. Roker seems to have carved a spot out in the rotation, and Hartford was utilized as the strong safety spot more often than not. Continue to keep an eye on McLain and, of course, never take your eyes off of Caleb Downs and where he lines up.

Not too much to really talk about here. These positions and roles are pretty well set in stone, with both kicking specialists the clear starters at this point. It's hard to see that changing anytime during the season. But hey, that's usually a good thing when you're talking about special teams.
