Why Blackburn Rovers signed Andri Gudjohnsen after 'complete striker' tag

Why Blackburn Rovers signed Andri Gudjohnsen after 'complete striker' tag

Valerien Ismael believes new signing Andir Gudjohnsen is the 'complete striker' that fits perfectly into Blackburn Rovers' system.

The Icelandic forward has penned a three-year deal at Ewood Park after arriving at the club over the weekend. Rovers have invested £2million euros into the 23-year-old, who was their first striking addition of the summer.

Gudjohnsen will be competing with Yuki Ohashi and Makhtar Gueye for minutes at Rovers, with Ismael admitting that they were always likely to sign a forward.

Ismael likened the new attacker to first-choice striker Ohashi but believes he will offer more physicality and height to the role.

"I think that we were always seeking someone in the front line," Ismael admitted to RoversTV after landing the hitman on an initial three-year deal.

"We have a clear profile in terms of what we expect from our striker and Yuki has set the benchmark with how we want to play.

"He's a similar profile, but a little bit bigger than Yuki and he'll bring some physicality.

"He has an intensity to his game, he's very good on the ball and has a very good link-up with others. He has good pace and is very disciplined out of possession, with a good understanding tactically.

"He's only 23, he's an international player and perfect for the profile we want. He's a young player but still has the experience, just as [Sidnei] Tavares and Ryan [Alebiosu] have. This is the profile that we've wanted and he'll bring experience and some room to improve as well."

Gudjohnsen will hope to hit the ground running when he returns from international duty with Iceland. He will need time to adapt to the Championship and his new team-mates with little time on the training ground despite the international break.

Ismael believes Rovers will be able to maximise his potential and give him the platform to shine after a trickier season with Gent, scoring five times.

The head coach was effusive with his praise on Gudjohnsen's ability, labelling him a complete striker.

"Our job now is to give him the opportunity to express himself because he's lost his way a little bit, but he shines for the national team every time and is always ready to go, so we're here for him to take the next step," he continued.

"You'll always be judged on your goals and assists at the end of the season if you're a striker. He'll bring more than that and brings the full package for us.

"He's a complete striker, so I hope he can bring all his qualities to the pitch. We're looking forward to working with him."
