India should not bow to US 'tantrums' over tariff: NC

SRINAGAR, July 31: National Conference (NC) chief spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq today said that while the United States' decision to impose a 25 percent tariff hike on Indian goods could exert significant pressure on the country's economy, India is a strong and resilient nation that should not bow to the "tantrums" of any foreign power.

Speaking to reporters in Srinagar, Sadiq questioned the Centre's claims of strong ties with the US, saying such relations should translate into tangible economic benefits, especially for regions like Jammu and Kashmir. "If our relations with the United States are truly good, then the country should benefit-particularly Jammu and Kashmir. A 25 percent tariff will hurt the economy, but we are a strong country and should not surrender to the whims of any foreign president," he said.

He urged the government to adopt a firm position in foreign policy while prioritizing domestic issues. "Our internal challenges must come first. Foreign policy is important, but our people's issues and interests must be safeguarded."

Sadiq also questioned the Congress party's commitment to restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. "When the Governor delivered his address in the first assembly, he clearly mentioned statehood. That was the government's first official document. So, we started from there," he said.

He called on Congress and its allies, who have more than 250 members in Parliament, to table a resolution for statehood. "Why have not they brought a resolution yet? We are ready to support it."

He also announced that preparations are underway for the upcoming Urs Mubarak of Sultan-ul-Arfeen Makhdoom Sahib (RA), which begins next week.

Sadiq acknowledged long-standing issues such as electricity, water, sanitation, stray dogs, and drug abuse in the area. "We have given directions on the spot. Some issues need funding, and I will try to address those through my own resources. Our goal is to ensure that visitors perform their religious duties with dignity and return in peace."
