SHAKER HEIGHTS, Ohio -- Shaker Square hopes to attract diverse businesses to its historic district with its new request for proposals.
The RFP, titled "A New Era for a Cleveland Classic," was announced this week by Shaker Square co-owners Cleveland Neighborhood Progress and Burten, Bell, Carr Development, Inc., in partnership with FASS Real Estate Services.
The RFP seeks businesses from within the Cleveland-area and beyond the region to set up shop in the square, which has several vacancies.
The nonprofit owners are seeking full service and fast-casual dining options, retail stores selling general merchandise and home goods, arts and culture venues, and personal services like barbershops and fitness studios, among other business types.
These categories were identified through community feedback, and align with the owners' long-term plan for the square. That plan, unveiled in January, called for more housing around the square, and a diverse mix of tenants to serve the neighborhood.
Available spaces include prime storefronts ranging from 2,900 to 5,000 square feet, along with upstairs office and studio spaces.
"It's vital for us to conduct a comprehensive search for a lasting retail mix in line with what the neighborhood is looking for," Tania Menesse, president and CEO of Cleveland Neighborhood Progress, said in a statement.
Both Menesse and Joy Johnson, executive director at Burten, Bell, Carr, highlighted the benefits of being located in the district.
Johnson described how it is "conveniently situated adjacent to neighborhoods like Larchmere, Buckeye and Shaker Heights," which she said would allow businesses to connect with a diverse retail customer base.
Menesse added that its proximity to public transit would also be ideal to provide staff with "easy access to their workplace."
