NEW YORK (WBNG) - As the government shutdown nears the end of its third week, democratic leaders are advocating for the Affordable Care Act Tax Credit program.
Democrats continue to push for the extension of the tax credits, which help millions of people pay for health insurance.
Senator Chuck Schumer said, without the program, insurance rates will skyrocket.
"The typical couple, 55 years old, who makes about $85,000 a year, will pay $25,000 more in healthcare. That's astounding; that's enough to bankrupt working families, drain someone's entire retirement savings, or force someone to go without healthcare at all. What a horrible choice," expressed Schumer.
Schumer places the blame on republicans, claiming that democrats have been open to negotiation, but will not move forward until the credits are extended.
As Nov. 1 approaches, many Americans will be selecting insurance policies, and Schumer said New Yorkers can't afford to wait any longer.
Republicans, however, are placing the blame on democrats.
Republican Congressman Nick Langworthy said, "House Republicans have already voted to fully fund the government. This is Schumer's shutdown, plain and simple. If he wants to make a deal, he should reopen the government first. Extortion is a crime, not a negotiation tactic."
