Ka Whawhai Tonu Triumphs At Septimius Awards 2025

Amsterdam, 8 September 2025 - Ka Whawhai Tonu (Struggle Without End), the powerful New Zealand historical feature, was recognised on the world stage at the prestigious Septimius Awards 2025, winning Best Oceanian Film. Lead actress Hinerangi Harawira-Nicholas also took home the award for Best Oceanian Actress, a testament to her incredible performance.

The Septimius Awards, held annually in Amsterdam, celebrate visionary films and groundbreaking talent from across the globe. This double win highlights the impact of Ka Whawhai Tonu as both a work of art and a cultural milestone -- history told for the first time from the perspective of the indigenous people.

Set during the New Zealand Wars, Ka Whawhai Tonu brings to life the story of Māori resistance, resilience, and survival in the face of colonial conflict. Directed by Michael Jonathan, the film has been praised for its authenticity, emotional depth, and powerful performances.

Hinerangi Harawira-Nicholas' win as Best Oceanian Actress shines a global spotlight on her extraordinary portrayal of Kopu, a performance that has moved audiences worldwide.

Producer Toby Parkinson said:

"This recognition at the Septimius Awards is a huge honour, not only for our team but also for the stories and history we are privileged to share. To see Ka Whawhai Tonu celebrated on the international stage affirms the importance of Māori narratives and voices in cinema."

"I am so proud of Hinerangi. She deserves this recognition for all the incredible hard work she put in to make this character such a real and honest portrayal. She is a star."

In her acceptance speech, Hinerangi Harawira-Nicholas thanked her family and wider community, and closed with:

"If this moment can be anything, I hope it is a reminder that our stories matter and that we are so much more than we sometimes believe. For other young Māori women, I hope it shows that we are so much more. If I can be a small beacon for that, I am proud."

The double win at the Septimius Awards solidifies Ka Whawhai Tonu's place as a landmark film for Aotearoa New Zealand and Oceanian storytelling.
