Gargrave's brave pursuit of Riddlesden falls short

Gargrave's brave pursuit of Riddlesden falls short

While Riddlesden defeated Airedale to clinch the title, Gargrave were falling to only their fifth defeat of the season.

Sent in at Silsden, the Skipton Road side were dismissed for 144, which would have been considerably lower were it not for keeper Matt Lorimer's 73, which came off 123 deliveries and contained nine fours and two sixes.

Only two of his team-mates reached double figures - skipper Matt Simpson (14) and George Beckwith (12) - as Cameron Knowles (5-53) and Kieran Lawrence (2-22) cut through the middle and lower order after early strikes by Will Pullen (2-23).

The Cobbydalers never looked like losing after tea as openers Sam Barraclough (80) and Jack Lister (47no) put on 118, Knowles (10no) then coming in to finish the job in only the 26th over.

The defeat for Gargrave elevated Silsden to second place - some achievement as they were only promoted as runners-up at the end of last season.

Glusburn were easy winners of their derby at Cowling, dismissing the hosts for 61 after they opted to bat, with only Martyn Dalby (10) and Levi Falvey (18no) making double figures and Steve Dalby scoring a 43-ball duck.

Abdullah Qureshi was the destroyer in chief with the outstanding analysis of 6.5-3-8-5, backed up by Irfan Khaliq (2-12 from eight overs) and Chris Longley (2-25).

Glusburn lost Brad Juliff and Ryan Ridehalgh early in their reply, but opener Matt Lloyd (32no) was joined by skipper Steve Brown (15no) in an unbroken stand of 46 to see them to an eight-wicket win by the end of the 17th over.

Relegated Bradley's game at home to Hepworth & Idle was interestingly poised when it was halted by rain.

Six of Bradley's top seven made double figures after they were inserted, with openers Umar Mahmood and Jim Tate both scoring 25 in a total of 141.

The Westfield Laners were 78-6 when the elements intervened, Akeel Rashid taking 4-42.

The battle for silverware in Division Two will go down to the last weekend as new leaders Haworth are three points ahead of Sutton.

While the former were winning their home derby against Long Lee, Sutton had the edge over visitors Denholme when rain stopped play.

Dave Snowden played a captain's knock after Sutton won the toss, scoring exactly 100 out of their 189-4, only hitting four fours in a grafting innings.

Laurence Powell (34no) also weighed in, but Denholme were 104-6 when rain stopped play, Sam Smith having taken 2-18 and Richard Walker 2-24.

Sutton finish off at Long Lee, while Haworth are at Wilsden, who may still need points to stay up.

Third-placed Thornton-in-Craven won a low-scoring affair at home to Wilsden by 25 runs.

The hosts were inserted and made 147, helped by their top six all making double figures.

Leading the way were David Holt (36) and keeper Jonny Martin (25) in an opening stand of 57, Tom Cleaver helping out with 28.

Wilsden had a first-wicket partnership of 48, but only got into three figures thanks to a last-wicket stand of 29 as change bowlers David Wolfe (4-38) and Martin (5-22 after taking his pads off) held sway.

Silsden II are guaranteed to finish fourth after a high-scoring draw at Ingrow, who made 322-9 after winning the toss but may have wished that they had declared earlier given the weather forecast.

The Cobbydalers, who used eight bowlers to try and prise the opposition out, were 223-5 after 31.5 overs when rain stopped play, having recovered from 27-4.

The chief reason for that was a century by Finlay Nixon-Snowden and a half-century from captain James Nelson.

Gareth Smith (41) started the revival with a partnership of 106 with Nixon-Snowden, who then added 90 unbroken with Nelson.

The former faced only 82 balls and hit an impressive 22 fours, while Nelson's 50 not out covered a mere 20 balls and included six fours and three sixes.

Skipton CI took some of the pressure off themselves with a seven-wicket victory over visitors Cowling II, who were castled for 59 after being sent in, with only three players making double figures and no-one getting out of the teens as Qamar Zulfiqar (7-24) was in devastating form, backed up by Zafar Iqbal (2-12).

CI reached their target inside 10 overs, with Zulfiqar hitting a quickfire 27 as opener.

Denholme are already down, but the second relegation place rests between Cowling II (169 points), Wilsden (178) and CI (181), with CI at Denholme on Saturday, Wilsden travelling to Haworth and Cowling II at home to Ingrow.

Gargrave II and Cononley have been promoted from Division Three, but the destination of the title is still undecided, with Gargrave (257 points) at CI II and Cononley (246) at home to Hepworth & Idle II.

Gargrave's match at home to Sutton II was abandoned by rain after Sutton had been dismissed for 102, Will Tedder (33) and Jack Middleton (24) scoring over half of those runs.

Tom Storr (4-23), Will Storr (2-10), Kieran Ashley (2-18) and Stuart Weatherill (3-41) also got among the wickets in an at-times fiery contest.

Cononley put the pressure on the leaders with a 34-run victory at Wilsden II, who sent the visitors in and saw them make 166-9.

Keeper Will Oakden (42), Nathan Parker (14) and Andrew Starkey (17) had Cononley sitting pretty at 62-1 and then four other players made double figures down the order.

Wilsden were 66-2, but lost two wickets at that score, two more at 88, two at 125 and two at 132 as Ikram Daulatzai (5-30) and Colin Stead (4-46) worked their magic.

CI II were dismissed for 66 at Menston IV after winning the toss, skipper Matt Ryder (32) scoring virtually half those runs as the only player to make double figures, Menston winning by seven wickets in the 15th over.

Bradley II gained a much-needed win at Hepworth & Idle II to lift themselves two places up the table and out of the relegation berths.

There were many Bradley heroes, but none bigger than Tom Eaglesfield, who scored 106 not out, and was aided by keeper Chris Kimberley (40), Harry Andrews (49) and captain Luke Watson (45no) as they racked up 273-3.

The Westfield Laners were then bowled out for 186 off the penultimate ball, with Donnacha Washington taking 3-36 and Eaglesfield 3-19.

Any one of the bottom five could still go down, with Bowling Baptist (154 points) at home to Wilsden II (168), Bradford & Bingley III (162) at fourth-placed Sutton II, CI II (170) at home to prospective champions Gargrave II and Bradley II (170) at home to third-placed Menston IV.

In Division Four, with leaders Bowling Baptist III unable to be promoted and as third-placed Glusburn II are 19 points ahead of Denholme II, only a disastrous performance at Ingrow II can prevent them from being promoted.

They had a well-contested match at home to Menston V, making 185-6 after being sent in.

That total was largely down to opener Dave Henson, who scored 81 at almost a run a ball and was sixth out at 142, having put on 59 for the third wicket with Javed Akram (16) and 50 for the fourth with Alan Coney (20), Amir Javed weighing in with 30 not out.

Menston had their own batting hero in Henry Dodgson (87), but only Ali Asghar (34) offered him meaningful support and they ended on 151-6, Freddie Pickles dismissing the top four, including Dodgson, at a cost of 32 runs.
