Inmate's death on July 8 ruled a homicide per Harris County medical examiner's office

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) -- The Harris County Medical Examiner's Office has ruled the death of Alexis Cardenas inside the Harris County Jail a homicide.

The death happened on July 8. Court records show Cardenas was picked up on July 6th on a misdemeanor traffic violation warrant from 2014. The sheriff's office said he spent about 30 hours in jail before it was decided he could be released. While he was being processed out of the jail, the sheriff's office said an altercation began. Video from the jail shows Cardenas forced his way into a part of the building where other inmates were being processed, was tased, restrained by several guards, and then became unresponsive. CPR was preformed before Cardenas was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead the sheriff's office said at the time.

Now, the medical examiner's office said his death is a homicide. The cause of death listed online is cardiac arrest that was brought on by being tased while having methamphetamine, cocaine, ethanol, and chlordiazepoxide in his system. Chlordiazepoxide is sometimes found in a number of medications, including those used to treat anxiety or even insomnia.

On Tuesday, the family of Cardenas is pushing back, saying in the video of his death he's acting normal before the altercation, and saying they have yet to get a copy of the video with audio.

This is being investigated as an in-custody death by the Texas Jail Commission.

As of Aug.1, seven jail employees involved in the death were reassigned to not work with inmates. ABC13 has reached out to the sheriff's office to ask for an update on the employees and the medical examiner's ruling but we are waiting to hear back.
