Kohl's exceeds Q1 expectations

MENOMONEE FALLS -- Kohl's Corp. on Thursday reported fiscal first quarter results that beat analysts' expectations.

The Menomonee Falls-based retailer reported a first-quarter loss of $15 million, or $0.13 per share, on revenue of $3.23 billion.

The average estimate of five analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for a loss of $0.22 per share, and three analysts surveyed by Zacks expected revenue of $3.2 billion.

Kohl's said it expects full-year earnings of $0.10 to $0.60 per share.

In the same period a year ago, Kohl's reported a loss of $27 million, or $0.24 per share, on revenue of $3.38 billion.

MADISON -- A woman faces a charge of operating while impaired after a crash Wednesday night on the Near East Side during which she had three unrestrained children under 5 in the vehicle, Madison police reported.

The two-vehicle crash happened about 10:20 p.m. in the area of Williamson and Baldwin streets, police spokesperson Officer Stephanie Fryer said in a statement.

Child Protective Services was notified, and the children were turned over to a family member. The 24-year-old woman was arrested on tentative charges of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated with children under 16, and three counts of child neglect.

No injuries were reported.

Man arrested after East Side fire

MADISON -- A man was arrested for arson in an apartment fire on Madison's East Side on May 20 that displaced five people, Madison police reported.

The 53-year-old man was last seen around 1 a.m. May 22 when he was discharged from the emergency room at UnityPoint Health-Meriter Hospital.

No details were provided on the man's arrest or why investigators determined the fire to be arson in a statement Friday morning by police spokesperson Officer Stephanie Fryer.

Madison firefighters were dispatched to the apartment complex in the 1700 block of Blossom Lane just before 6 a.m. May 20. Everyone got out safely. The Red Cross assisted five people who were displaced from the basement level units, and damage to the structure was estimated at $100,000.

Delivery vehicle stolen Downtown

MADISON -- A delivery driver's vehicle was stolen as he made a stop to drop off food Downtown on May 23, Madison police reported.

Associated Press The man was making the delivery in the 400 block of West Gorham Street around 11 p.m. when a man ran out of the building and stole his vehicle, police spokesperson Officer Stephanie Fryer said in a statement.

The thief got stopped in traffic and the delivery driver ran up to his vehicle when the thief accelerated and struck him. The delivery driver was not injured.

The vehicle was recovered Friday morning in the 700 block of Mesta Lane. No arrests have been made and the incident remains under investigation.
