The Geminids meteor shower will peak Saturday with up to 120 meteors per hour, according to NASA. Geminids are bright, fast and usually appear yellow.

Visible across the world, the Geminids will start appearing around 9 or 10 p.m. Saturday and will last until dawn. For the best chance at spotting the meteor shower, NASA recommends getting away from city lights and heading somewhere dark.

The best view will be found by lying on your back with your feet facing south, NASA says. Patience is the key to an ideal sky watching experience - it takes about 30 minutes for your eyes to adjust to the dark.

Meteor showers occur when Earth moves through fields of asteroid and comet debris. As these particles hit Earth's atmosphere, they disintegrate and make the streaks of color and light we call "shooting stars."

The Geminids originate from asteroid 3200 Phaethon, according to NASA. They are named after the constellation Gemini, where the meteors appear to come from.

The meteor shower has been active since Nov. 19 and will taper off by Dec. 24.
