Here's why only 11 Toronto Blue Jays players have contracts for next season | Sports

If you're trying to figure out what exactly the Toronto Blue Jays roster will look like next season, you're probably not the only one.

But while some sports have a pretty simple contract structure, don't count baseball in that category.

More than half of the players who suited up for the Blue Jays in the World Series are without a contract for next year, but that doesn't necessarily make them free agents next year.

Here are the 11 players with an official Blue Jays contract next year, and their salary totals (in USD), via Baseball-Reference:

If you're counting, that's two starting pitchers, three relievers, first base, shortstop, two outfielders, a catcher, and a utility player... which is obviously far removed from what the late-March Opening Day roster will look like.

Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean that missing names from this list won't be returning to Toronto. Players like Ernie Clement and Daulton Varsho are both eligible for arbitration, meaning they're still under team control, but can go to a third-party mediator if they're unable to work out a deal with the Blue Jays.

There are also several key players in the pre-arbitration phase, such as rookie star pitcher Trey Yesavage, infielder Addison Barger, and outfielder Davis Schneider, who's only three years deep into his MLB career. Under MLB rules, they're still only eligible for league minimum salary, though they're able to negotiate a possible long-term deal with the team.

The biggest name headlining the actual free agent list is Bo Bichette, though pitchers Max Scherzer, Chris Bassitt, and potentially Shane Bieber -- who has an opt-out clause in his contract -- could all be gone next season as well.

In any case, Toronto will need to go through the paperwork to shore up its roster for next season, whether or not they go and land another big name in free agency, with so many names left to work out deals with.
