A government analysis revealed widespread failures in sunscreen efficacy, sparking consumer concern in a nation with teh world's highest skin cancer rates.
In June 2024,Australia's Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA),a government regulatory body, conducted an analysis of widely-sold sunscreens. The investigation revealed that several popular and often expensive brands failed to deliver the Sun Protection Factor (SPF) advertised on their packaging. This revelation has triggered product recalls and raised serious questions about consumer safety.
One notably concerning case involved Ultra Violette's Lean Screen Skinscreen, which claimed an SPF of 50+. However, TGA testing showed the product offered an SPF of only four, a drastically lower level of protection. The BBC reports that Ultra Violette voluntarily recalled the product in August 2024,but the TGA indicates that at least 20 other products from various brands are also affected.
