Thought for the week: From thrillers to scripture, why books matter

Thought for the week: From thrillers to scripture, why books matter

I am a very firm believer in supporting my local library, so every three weeks our so, I pop along and take out a selection of books.

I have to say that I have eclectic tastes when it comes to books, so I will read all sorts of things, from murder mysteries to detective novels to historical books to biographies to thrillers.

I'm sure you get the picture.

I also love to listen to audiobooks, particularly on holiday.

I find that I can immerse myself even more if a book is being read to me and I can allow my imagination to run wild.

My dear old mum was a teacher all of her working life and was, and still is, passionate about children being able to read.

She has always maintained that if a child could read, even though they may not be the best academically, this would still enable them to get on in life.

If you are reading this missive now, I rest my case!

Roald Dahl, the author of many children's books, said: "I have a passion for teaching kids to become readers, to become comfortable with a book, not daunted.

"Books shouldn't be daunting, they should be funny, exciting and wonderful; and learning to be a reader gives a terrific advantage."

So, how is our own reading life?

Are we daunted by books or anything else we may have to read?

You will not be surprised to know that I very much advocate reading the bible and use a plan to read a piece of scripture each day along with an explanation of it and how it should be applied.

The bible is God's word to us.

2 Timothy 3 and verses 16-17 say: "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work."

In Matthew 4 and verse 4, Jesus himself says: "No! The Scriptures say, 'People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.'" (NLT)

Reading fictional books enables us to 'escape' sometimes as we might relax as we read.

Reading the bible, however, is like reading an instruction book or obtaining factual information.
