Netflix confirms "stunningly original" crime thriller with tormented detective from Black Mirror boss

Netflix has unveiled a "stunningly original" crime thriller from Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker.

The currently untitled series, which will consist of four parts, follows a "tormented detective" from the city of Bleakford, who ventures south to London on a "mission to catch a ritualistic serial killer before they run out of people to kill".

Billed as a "profoundly serious [and] stunningly original crime thriller" that will "contain blood and frowning", the lead cast for the series includes Paddy Considine, Georgina Campbell and Lena Headey.

"I'm beyond thrilled to be saying these words for the press release," said Brooker in a statement. "I've dreamt of providing a quote ever since I was a young foetus, and now here I am doing it."

"I'd pinch myself, but like all of us, I'm terrified that if I do that, I might wake up and discover 2025 has all been a magical dream. Please watch my show. I am begging you," he added.

Brooker has enlisted a large team of writers for the upcoming project, with the creator being joined by Ben Caudell, Jason Hazeley, Emer Kenny, Dan Maier, Joel Morris and Victoria Asare Archer.

He will also serve as an executive producer alongside Jessica Rhoades, Annabel Jones and Mark Kinsella, while Richard Webb will be the sole producer. Al Campbell, who has worked on Inside No. 9 and Code 404, will direct the series.

While Brooker's detective series is a way from hitting the small screen, the writer unveiled the seventh season of Black Mirror earlier this year, with the six-part season being the first since 2023.

Following its release, there was some criticism from viewers that the series had betrayed its roots by casting big-name stars instead of burgeoning talent, though Brooker dismissed the notion.

"Sometimes I've seen people go, 'Oh, it's all famous people now, Black Mirror!' I think, well they've not noticed that we also have lots of episodes that showcase other talents that they don't know yet," he explained to Digital Spy.
