49ers might be desperate enough to risk signing this problematic WR

49ers might be desperate enough to risk signing this problematic WR

After roster cutdown day, San Francisco 49ers fans probably have a few questions. But, none are bigger than the ones among the wide receiver room. San Francisco is borderline-desperate there.

Looking around the league yesterday, there weren't too many big names released at the position. But, one of them does have a history of production, although he's come with some baggage lately: Diontae Johnson.

The Niners have such a need at wide receiver that it might mean they look at someone like Johnson, even if it were to be a short-term stint (which he's grown used to over the past year and a half).

Just think about how bad it's gotten, first.

Brandon Aiyuk is recovering from a torn ACL. Jauan Jennings is hurt and also in the midst of wanting a new contract, which we don't know how will pan out.

Jordan Watkins is hurt. Jacob Cowing is hurt. Trent Taylor is on injured reserve. Demarcus Robinson is suspended.

At this very moment, the 49ers' only truly healthy wide receivers are Ricky Pearsall and the newly-acquired Skyy Moore. Are we understanding, yet, the desperation level, here?

Johnson has had his fair share of issues, including being so disgruntled that he refused to go into a game when he was with the Baltimore Ravens. He was recently released by the Cleveland Browns after his second stint with Baltimore. Before that, he spent a couple of games with the Houston Texans.

And of course, before the Texans, was his most infamous stint with Baltimore. Prior to the Ravens, Johnson had been traded to the Carolina Panthers from the Pittsburgh Steelers. And all of this happened between March of 2024 and present day.

Now, Johnson seemed to be enjoying his time with Cleveland, calling it a "humbling" experience having gotten the phone call from the Browns. But, has he matured enough? That's the big question.

We are talking about a receiver who went over 700 receiving yards in four-straight seasons, including an 1,100-yard year with the Steelers. But, his production (and attitude) has gone downhill since leaving Pittsburgh.

Whatever the 49ers do, they have to make a move quickly. That wide receiver room needs a ton of help.
