A law enforcement officer in Selmer, identified as Officer/Deputy Sgt. Rick Finley, died after responding to complaints of a "suspicious male" who attempted to force his way into a residence in the 100 block of New Bethel Rd.
The Selmer Police Department released details of the incident on Sunday. Finley was employed part-time with SPD and full-time with the McNairy County Sheriff's Office.
Around 3 p.m. on Saturday, SPD was informed that the male had attempted to enter the residence and then fired several shots into the door before leaving on foot ahead of police arrival.
The male was located at a separate residence's driveway across the street. When Finley approached, the male physically attacked him and then shot him several times, according to SPD.
Lt. Ron Pilkington arrived and returned fire, killing the suspect.
After SPD contacted the 25th Judicial District Attorney's Office, the incident is currently being investigated by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.
On Monday, the sheriff's office announced a "Sea of Blue" ceremony for Finley, beginning at 6 p.m. on Dec. 18 at the Robert K. Lee Justice Complex. With shining blue lights, the law enforcement procession pays homage to the service of a fallen officer.
Memorial services for Finley will take place at Lakeview Church in Selmer on Dec. 19 with visitation from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the funeral to begin at 4 p.m.
No graveside ceremony will be held.
