It's been a long ride for a family business in Woodhaven, and now, after 80 years have come and gone, their professional journey is coming to a stop.

The owners of Petri Bikes, also known as Al Petri & Sons Bicycles, have been serving the Downriver community for decades, but plans are in the works to bring it all to a halt on Nov. 29.

The business is located at 22720 Allen Road, in Woodhaven.

Al and Joyce Petri first opened their doors in 1946 and since that time, the family said Petri Bikes has been more than a store -- it's been a gathering place, a hub for riders, and a part of countless family stories.

The family posted a notice on its social media account not only to inform the customers, but also express a big measure of gratitude.

The post said from first bikes, race tune-ups, charity rides and local events, they have shared the joy of cycling with generations of "amazing people."

"Over the past several years, the face of retail has changed dramatically, and bicycle retail in particular has become an increasingly challenging space," the family's post said. "With those shifts, and with retirement on the horizon for much of our family and team, we felt the time was right to close this chapter on our own terms."

As far as the family is concerned, this isn't a story of loss, but one of gratitude.

"We're deeply thankful for every customer, friend, and supporter who's been a part of our journey," the family posted. "The relationships we've built and the community we've been proud to serve, mean more than words can express."

While the bicycle store will no longer occupy its familiar home, the family is sure the impact of Petri Bikes will live on in the rides, friendships, and the spirit of cycling that continues to thrive in the Downriver area.

"From our family to yours, thank you for nearly 80 years of loyalty, laughter, and shared miles."
